Saxby Chambliss: Fun With OnTheIssues

Tomorrow is the runoff election in Georgia for Saxby Chambliss's Senate seat. Chambliss is being challenged by Democrat Jim Martin. We were going to do a whole post about how horrible Chambliss is and how much he deserves to be voted out of office...but we've got a long to-do list and if we're going to take the time to write something that's doctoral dissertation length, it's going to be on a more fun topic than this. So instead, we decided to play a little Senator Saxby Horrible Voting Record Grab Bag with his ontheissues.org profile. Below are our "favorites" in several important categories. Check it out and see if any of it seems like the way our country needs to go right now.

Miscellaneous Happy Fun Time

  1. Voted NO on limiting soldiers' deployment to 12 months. (Jul 2007) [Chambliss has voted several times against "dwell time" amendments that would give troops more time at home between deployments. His reasoning is so ridiculous that we had to include it: “During World War II and other wars of this country, service members participating in those wars deployed for 3 and 4 years with little or no break. With this in mind the current proposal by Senator Webb seems out of step with history and what it has taken to win the wars of this country. I can think of no way in which the Webb amendment will help our Nation succeed in Iraq.” Oh and BTW - Saxby himself got five student deferments so that he wouldn't have to serve in Vietnam, and also claimed to have a "bum knee" that kept him from serving. Today he's an avid golfer.]
  2. Voted NO on repealing tax subsidy for companies which move US jobs offshore. (Mar 2005)
  3. Voted YES on prohibiting needle exchange & medical marijuana in DC. (Oct 1999)
  4. Voted NO on shifting $11B from corporate tax loopholes to education. (Mar 2005)
  5. Supports a Constitutional Amendment for school prayer. (May 1997)
  6. Rated 100% by the Christian Coalition: a "pro-family" voting record. (Dec 2003) [Quotation marks are our addition]
  7. Voted with Republican Party 94.4% of 319 votes. (Sep 2007)
  8. Continue to support Bush's new initiatives and the Iraq war. (Aug 2008)
  9. Voted against the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (April 2008)
  10. Says he didn't win on Election Day because there was high voter turnout among minorities, and turnout wasn't high enough among "our folks".

As a bonus item, let's all remember that Chambliss won his Senate seat six years ago partly by running ads challenging the courage of his opponent Max Cleland, a Vietnam veteran who lost three limbs during the war. At the time, fellow veteran John McCain condemned the Chambliss ads as "worse than disgraceful" and "reprehensible". Guess McCain got over it, because he went straight to Georgia after Election Day to campaign for the reprehensible, worse than disgraceful Chambliss's re-election. Chambliss himself maintains that the ad was "so mild", "a lightweight ad", "very fair", and "truthful in every way", adding "If Cleland had won, you'd never have heard a thing about it...They lost, they're always going to be bitter about it."

In short, Saxby Chambliss sucks and, while it looks like he has the edge in early voting and we're not getting our hopes up, we hope he loses.

For more on Chambliss's opponent, Jim Martin, a former state Representative, Vietnam veteran, and pro-choice Democrat, check out martinforsenate.com, or check out this piece from Blog for Choice about Jim Martin, what a cool guy he is, and how he has a record of standing up for women's rights even when it's not exactly popular. And if you live in Georgia, go out tomorrow and vote!

And let's not forget his wonderful, helpful warning during the McCain/Obama presidential campaigns about "the other folks are voting" (you know, who the other folks are right? the non-white folks).
