What does this say about me as a parent?

Actual conversation:
"Mom, what's a prostitute?"

"Um.... it's someone who has sex for money."

"Awesome!? What do you mean "awesome"?"

"Um, I meant... weird."

"Hm. That's better."
She is so my child.

This made me giggle.

Most of my favorite things qualify as "weird" and "awesome."

Hmmm... an interesting conversation, but a potential teachable moment was missed, methinks. My local paper ran an article today about massage parlor busts for prostitution, where the girls were arrested and the johns were allowed to walk.

The article was blasting this lapse of equity for a (currently) illegal act, and I concur, tho sex work should/must/needs to be given more respect for the ancient, historical and honorable profession it has always been.

Ya, I giggled too. My daughter just rolled her eyes.

Hm. I'd love some advice on appropriate ways to further "teach" my 9-year-old about sex work.

HA! Um, er, yes, you are correct... unawares we are referring to a 9yr old. Please to be forgiving my stupid self. My comments stand, tho... really hate the way our society hold johns in a different light than the sex workers themselves.

Thanks for this XLNT blog, BTW... one of my favorites and a daily stop for this illucidated male.

Well, I really would love some "teaching" advice (if anyone has any). Most of the "taboo" topics, she's already got covered... but I wasn't sure how to respond to "sex for money = awesome". ;-)

what message do you want to teach?

LOL, well I don't necessarily want to teach anything about it just yet... but eventually it will come up again I'm sure.

We're big into sex workers rights over here at Evil Slutopia... but yet, it's not exactly the safest career choice.

The joys of being a mother of an open minded child. :)

Interesting. I wonder what was going on in that head of hers when she was thinking "awesome". Maybe she only heard the money part.

Well, sex and money can both be pretty "awesome" at times (as long as you are enjoying both). I can see why a precocious child would see it as a potentially positive way of "killing two birds with one stone" as it were. :) Wish I had some advice, lol....my son is almost 4 and I'm already getting questions that make me pause, uh, well, ..........
