Cosmo: More Slut-Shaming, Still No Fact-Checking

Last month, we refuted Cosmo's slut-shaming of Bridget Marquardt and her "space-themed" outfit... proving that Cosmo just doesn't fact-check anything. Especially not if they have an opportunity to make fun of someone! (Particularly if that person is sexy and/or wears revealing clothing.)

Flip to the Hot Sheet's "What's Not So Hot" section in almost any issue of Cosmo and you're likely to see them criticizing a sexy female celebrity for... well... mainly for being sexy. Seriously, it's like Cosmo sees a woman in a mini skirt and they need to mock them so badly that they don't care if what they're saying is completely false and/or makes no sense.

The new July 2010 issue of Cosmo is a perfect example...

WHAT'S NOT SO HOT

Loaded Accessories

Dear Bai Ling,

Just when we were getting used to your peekaboo tops and postage-stamp skirts, you had to take the phrase dressed to kill way too far. Here's a tip: Firearms don't go with...anything.

Sincerely,
Cosmo

(The photo caption reads: "The ammo is in her other bedazzled vest.")

Oh Cosmo, you're so clever. Only... not.

They must have really been desperate for someone to make fun of, if they're actually going to criticize her for holding a machine gun in a photo. Guess her outfit wasn't outrageous enough to mock on its own, so they needed to sneak the slut-shaming in under the guise of making fun of her for the gun thing. Of course, the comments about her outfit are textbook slut-shaming: "Just when we were getting used to your peekaboo tops and postage-stamp skirts"... as if Bai Ling's wardrobe choices are something that Cosmo struggles to tolerate.

She does dress a little crazy, but is Cosmo really that "tolerant" of crazy fashion choices? The fact that they would make fun of Bai Ling at all is so dumb... it's Bai Ling! That's one of her more understated and "normal" outfits (with or without the gun). But are we really meant to believe that Bai Ling just walks around with a machine gun as an accessory on an everyday basis? Of course not. So why base the criticism of her on the obviously ridiculous premise that she does?

This photo of Bai Ling was actually taken at an event promoting the video game Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction. "Conviction" is the fifth installment in the Splinter Cell video game series (based on Clancy's book Splinter Cell book series). The games follow a highly-trained agent of a black-ops sub-division within the NSA... so big scary guns are sort of the perfect accessory for Conviction's launch party at Les Deux in Los Angeles. Clearly Cosmo doesn't get the whole "theme" thing.

But in case you're wondering if Bai Ling brought the (obviously fake) gun on her own just to be extra outrageous... she didn't.

Here are two other photos of Bai Ling from this event:

Bai Ling "borrowed" the gun for a photo... as did plenty of other celebrities at the event. [See more pics here]

What... Cosmo has nothing to say to Joel McHale??? Maybe if he was wearing a mini skirt.
