The AFA Is Against Indoctrinating Kids, Unless They're The Ones Doing It

As most of you know, June was LGBT Pride Month, with Pride events taking place in towns and cities across the country. One thing you can count on at this time of year is that conservative groups like our friends at the American Family Association will take the opportunity to launch protests of companies that they think are too gay-friendly. PepsiCo was a target last year, and this year the lucky company is Home Depot.
Home Depot exposes children to homosexuality in celebrated style

According to the 2010 Southern Maine Pride website, Home Depot signed on as a major sponsor of its 2010 Gay Pride event. But simply financing the event wasn't enough for the big box chain.

Home Depot also signed on as a vendor, conducting kid's craft workshops for children in the midst of loud and boisterous gay activities. To this end, Home Depot is basically encouraging the attendance of children at events which openly expose them to transvestites, cross-dressers, and homosexual activists.

Unfortunately, Home Depot's participation in the Southern Maine Pride Festival doesn't stand alone. It has also sponsored and participated in the 2010 Boston Gay Pride parade.

Gay pride events have a long track record for offensive public displays of homosexual conduct. Obviously, Home Depot is OK with the idea of exposing children to an unhealthy and risky environment. So much so, it is willing to also celebrate it by participating in its promotion.

TAKE ACTION: Let Home Depot know you are sickened by their support and approval of children at homosexual events. If you are a customer, please add an additional personal line to our prepared letter to Home Depot. After sending your email, make an extra effort to protect children by calling Home Depot personally. Their corporate phone number is 770-433-8211. [AFA Action Alert]
So to sum up, it's basically 'won't somebody think of the poor innocent children being exposed to the evil gay agenda?!' And they're mad at Home Depot not just for being there, but for "encouraging" children to be there as well. I think this is a bit of a stretch. Even if Home Depot was doing a kid-friendly activity at this Pride event, the kids would have to already be at Pride in order to participate. And if they're already there, that most likely means that they're the children of members of the LGBT community, or of straight allies. And that means that they've already been "exposed" to homosexuality. It's not as if Home Depot went around advertising a free craft workshop for kids just to trap unsuspecting straight couples into bringing their children to a Pride event.

I will say, I like the phrase "loud and boisterous gay activities". That's a pretty fun description of Pride. But the AFA isn't laughing, because they actually believe that bringing children to Pride events is "exposing" them to "an unhealthy and risky environment". They use language like this a lot, as if being gay was a contagious disease. In fact, they're so serious about this that they actually put out a press release calling a young boy who participated in an Arkansas pride parade a victim of child abuse:

AFA says using 10-year old as gay pride parade grand marshal a form of child abuse

This weekend, the Northwest Arkansas Gay Pride Parade will have a 10-year-old boy, Will Marshall [ed. note: it's actually "Will Phillips"], serving as Grand Marshal. The boy says of homosexuals that this “is the way they are born.”

“It’s shameful that adults would abuse a brain-washed child in this way,” said AFA president Tim Wildmon. “He’s obviously just parroting the nonsense he’s been told by manipulative adults. For gay activists to trot out this child and make him the poster child for promoting unnatural sexual expression is a form of child abuse.

“When you realize that the FDA won’t allow a male to donate blood if he’s had sex with another male even one time since 1977, you begin to understand the enormous health risks involved in this kind of sexual behavior,” added Wildmon. “We call on Mayor Lioneld Jordan of Fayetteville to cancel his plans to issue a proclamation celebrating homosexual behavior and Gay Pride. There is nothing about homosexual conduct to be proud of, and much to be ashamed of.” [AFA via Good As You. Correction to the boy's name is from Good As You.]
Wow, Home Depot's little arts and crafts table pales in comparison to this. Now we've gone from just "exposing" kids to the horrors of homosexuality to all-out brainwashing and child abuse. I would feel bad for the AFA - I mean, it's gotta suck to be less evolved than a 10 year old - but I don't. Because they're sanctimonious willfully ignorant homophobes.

And just a quick side note about this press release - this is yet another reason why we have to keep working to change the outdated rules about gay men donating blood. Organizations like the AFA are using the policy as "proof" of how harmful and wrong and dangerous it is to be gay.

Now, let's compare these statements from the AFA about children with a recent post by Bryan Fisher on the AFA's blog entitled "That's OK - let's just outbreed 'em". The post is about a recent report that came out showing that more American women are choosing not to have children.
Nearly 20 percent of older women do not have children, compared to 10 percent in the 1970s, the Pew Research Center said.

"In recent decades, social pressure to play traditional roles has lessened in a broad variety of ways and there is more leeway for individual choice. This could play a part in lowering pressure for people to get married and bear children," said D'Vera Cohn, a co-author of the report. "Women have more options than in the past to build strong careers and to exercise the choice not to have children," she added in an email.

...Cohn said another reason for the increase is that children are seen by some as less important for a successful marriage. A 2007 Pew survey found that 41 percent of adults said that children are very important for a good marriage, down from 65 percent in 1990.

...Education also seems to be a factor in a woman's choice to be a mother. The more educated women are, the higher the childless rate is. For women with a high school diploma, the rate is 17 percent, compared to 24 percent of women with a bachelor's degree. But the childlessness rate has decreased for women with advanced degrees from 31 percent in 1994 to 24 percent in 2008. [Reuters. Emphasis mine.]

So what did Mr. Fisher of the AFA conclude after learning this information? Well, obviously that
the devious liberals and feminists who control the secular universities are brainwashing young women into losing their maternal instincts, because they think of children as "toxic parasites" that are ruining the planet. (I'm paraphrasing but not exaggerating; that's actually the argument.) Of course, Fisher ignores the fact that the childlessness rate for women with advanced degrees has actually decreased in the last decade, because it's not convenient to his argument.

Since Fisher has concluded that this report means that "liberals are breeding themselves out of existence", he sees this as an opportunity. I'll let him lay the whole plan out for you because it's really worth taking the whole thing in (I'll bold the best parts):
All this represents a marvelous opportunity for conservatives. We can regain political control of this country by simply following the biblical mandate to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” This cultural mandate from God, as recorded in Genesis 1:28, has never been rescinded. It is as much in effect today as the moment it was first uttered.
If secular fundamentalists don’t want to pay any attention to this directive, fine. To paraphrase Yogi Berra, if they’re not going to have kids, who’s gonna stop ‘em?
To “multiply” or “increase in number,” as other translations put it, means that the average family needs to have at least three children, since by having two children parents only replace themselves. (Of course, medical problems may make this impossible for some.)
Since we need to make up for the childbearing aversion of our secular fundamentalist friends, perhaps each conservative family can set out to have at least four children. It won’t be too long before our poor, outflanked elites will be so badly outnumbered by a new generation imbued with the values of the Judeo-Christian tradition they may have to start having children of their own just to fight back and retain a sliver of cultural influence.
And so we will have fulfilled Margaret Sanger’s dream: “more children from the fit.” (Of course, for the founder of Planned Parenthood “fit” meant “white,” which is why Adolph HItler loved her. By “fit,” I mean parents, regardless of race, who are transmitting to their children the Judeo-Christian values on which America was built.) Who’d have thought that it would be conservative Christians who would bring her dream to realization?
Let the left rant and hyperventilate and blow up like puffer fish responding to these notions. While they erupt and steam, we will quietly go about the task of building our families and training up cultural warriors for the next generation. Let them fume in their childless rage while we celebrate the joys of parenthood and along the way implement a sure-fire long range strategy for taking our country back.

Okay, let's recap. If you bring children to a gay pride event, you're exposing them to an unhealthy and risky environment at best and brainwashing and abusing them at worse. If you send your daughter to a secular university, you're delivering her into the clutches of liberal kid-haters who will try to brainwash her and leech out her maternal instinct, and most likely dooming her to a future filled with "childless rage". If your plan for the size of your family is influenced by a desire to "outbreed" those you disagree with for political gain in the future, and you specifically set out to "train" your kids as "cultural warriors", that's normal and healthy and not at all manipulative or brainwashing. Or, to put it another way, the AFA is fine with parents "indoctrinating" children, as long as they're doing it with AFA-approved beliefs. Won't you sleep better tonight knowing how much the AFA truly cares about kids?

I was laughing hysterically about that guy's outbreeding plan...it would be even more funny if it were true. Apparently they think that all their kids are going to believe the same things they do, which is really, really stupid.

Wait, that describes most of what they spew.

Seriously, if I were from...oh, some advanced society from outer space, and I was hearing stories about these people second hand, I wouldn't believe they existed until I saw the crazy with my own eyes. The lack of rational thought is just stunning.

Wow, that's not scary. What a psycho. People like this give every Christian a bad name.

My favorite part is the kid that's being "brainwashed." I'm sorry, uh, did you see Jesus Camp? According to their standards, we are all brainwashing our children. It's called teaching your children your values.

When reading that "outbreeding" plan, I was thinking of Idiocracy. The film starts out showing a stereotypically redneck, uneducated family and their burgeoning family tree. This contrasts with a highly educated couple's struggle to have just one child. That's what leads, eventually, to the idiocracy. I sincerely hope that no one follows this guy's advice.
