Some Self Esteem For You Today...

There's a lot going on in the wonderful world of girls' self esteem... so we wanted to highlight a few 'campaigns' going on right now. We've written on here a lot about slut-shaming and reclaiming the word 'slut' and we feel that this 'slut mission statement' completely ties into the issue of self esteem. We all need to combat the prevalence of women and girls being shamed just for being who they are.

But before that we have to give credit where credit is due. We found out about all of these programs in the same place: New Moon Girls. Last year I signed Lil' Lilith up for a subscription to the magazine and membership to the online site, but I have to admit that I read it just as much as she does. (I also follow them on Facebook.) New Moon Girls magazine is 100% advertising-free and dedicated to helping girls discover and honor their true selves. Created by girls, for girls. [More info here.]

If you have a young girl in your life, I highly recommend it. Anyway, onto the self-esteem!!!

  • Turn Beauty Inside Out
Today (and every third Wednesday in May) is Turn Beauty Inside Out TBIO Day - a day when communities across the nation celebrate the beauty of conviction, caring and action - in order to foster participation, discussion and awareness of images in the media. The campaign, which is a collaborative project of Mind on the Media and New Moon Girls, is based on the fact that girls and boys need a definition of beauty that focuses on who they are and what they do, not on how they look.
For some shocking facts and more info on how you can get involved: Turn Beauty Inside Out

  • Girl-Caught!
Another project of New Moon Girls, Girl-Caught! is a campaign aimed at combating negative and disrespectful ads and product packages. They provide printable online-templates for stickers that girls can stick right onto the ads and packages, indicating whether they think they're good or bad:
For more information (and printable stickers): Girl-Caught!

  • Operation Beautiful
Operation Beautiful: Transforming the Way You See Yourself One Post-it Note at a Time, is a campaign with the mission of ending negative self-talk (or "fat talk"). It began when its creator decided to leave positive messages on the mirrors of public restrooms. Now she is urging you all to do the same and leave a motivating note or post-it and put it in a public place such as a bathroom mirror, gym locker room, or even on a random car's windshield.

For more information or to share your own messages: Operation Beautiful.

We were so inspired by these campaigns, that we decided to embrace the idea of spreading self-esteem, self-acceptance, and self-love... We were particularly inspired by Operation Beautiful, to create our own products with positive messages: You Are Perfect...

We've decided to order stickers, magnets, postcards, and notecards (other items are also available) and distribute them: ... leaving them in public places for others to see ... sending them to people we love ... or even using them as a daily reminder to ourselves that we are all perfect JUST THE WAY WE ARE.

The campaigns also inspired two other designs: I Love Myself and I Am Beautiful (more products coming soon).

We were also inspired to create a self-esteem playlist of songs that remind us that we should be feeling good about ourselves! (Coming Soon here ya go!)

I used to read New Moon when I was younger. I'd totally forgotten about it until you posted this. I'm glad they're still going strong after all this time. Thanks for accidentally reminding me.
